I forgot my laptop… No problem!

This morning I arrived at my office after a 90-minute drive, noticing I forgot to bring my laptop with me. In the morning rush I did bring my bag alright, but I forgot my laptop was still connected to my home office where I was working the night before.[tatsu_section bg_color= “” bg_image= “” bg_repeat= “no-repeat” bg_attachment= “scroll” bg_position= “top left” bg_size= “cover” bg_animation= “none” padding= ‘{“d”:”15px 0px 15px 0px”}’ margin= “0px 0px 0px 0px” border= “0px 0px 0px 0px” border_color= “” bg_video= “0” bg_video_mp4_src= “” bg_video_ogg_src= “” bg_video_webm_src= “” bg_overlay= “0” overlay_color= “” full_screen= “0” section_id= “” section_class= “” section_title= “” offset_section= “” offset_value= “0” full_screen_header_scheme= “background–dark” hide_in= “0” key= “fu86qtwuc59g1pl”][tatsu_row full_width= “0” no_margin_bottom= “0” equal_height_columns= “0” gutter= “tiny” column_spacing= “” fullscreen_cols= “0” swap_cols= “0” row_id= “” row_class= “” hide_in= “0” layout= “1/1” key= “fu86qtwug3funkqi”][tatsu_column bg_color= “” bg_image= “” bg_repeat= “no-repeat” bg_attachment= “scroll” bg_position= ‘{“d”:”top left”}’ bg_size= ‘{“d”:”cover”}’ padding= ‘{“d”:”0px 0px 0px 0px”}’ custom_margin= “0” margin= ‘{“d”:”0px 0px 0px 0px”}’ border= ‘{“d”:”0px 0px 0px 0px”}’ border_color= “” enable_box_shadow= “0” box_shadow_custom= “0 0 15px 0 rgba(198,202,202,0.4)” bg_video= “0” bg_video_mp4_src= “” bg_video_ogg_src= “” bg_video_webm_src= “” bg_overlay= “0” overlay_color= “” animate_overlay= “none” link_overlay= “” vertical_align= “none” column_offset= “0” offset= “0px 0px” z_index= “0” column_parallax= “0” animate= “0” animation_type= “fadeIn” animation_delay= “0” col_id= “” column_class= “” hide_in= “0” layout= “1/1” gutter= “tiny” key= “fu86qtwujj4yjzg1”][tatsu_inner_row no_margin_bottom= “1” equal_height_columns= “1” gutter= “medium” column_spacing= “px” swap_cols= “0” row_id= “” row_class= “” hide_in= “0” layout= “1/2+1/2” key= “BJeUZjpABX”][tatsu_inner_column bg_color= “” bg_image= “” bg_repeat= “no-repeat” bg_attachment= “scroll” bg_position= “top left” bg_size= “cover” padding= ‘{“d”:”0px 0px 0px 0px”}’ custom_margin= “0” margin= ‘{“d”:”0px 0px 0px 0px”}’ border= ‘{“d”:”0px 0px 0px 0px”}’ border_color= “” enable_box_shadow= “0” box_shadow_custom= “0 0 15px 0 rgba(198,202,202,0.4)” bg_video= “0” bg_video_mp4_src= “” bg_video_ogg_src= “” bg_video_webm_src= “” bg_overlay= “0” overlay_color= “” animate_overlay= “none” link_overlay= “” vertical_align= “middle” column_offset= “0” offset= “0px 0px” z_index= “0” column_parallax= “0” animate= “0” animation_type= “fadeIn” animation_delay= “0” col_id= “” column_class= “” hide_in= “0” layout= “1/2” gutter= “medium” key= “ry_WsTCS7”][tatsu_text max_width= ‘{“d”:”100″}’ wrap_alignment= “center” animate= “” animation_type= “fadeIn” animation_delay= “0” key= “B1lKsTCSm”]Whereas in any other situation, I would have to drive the whole way back to collect my laptop, at the Awingu office I could just take one of the Google Chromebooks laying around in the office. It was like the incident didn’t happen at all! Sure, I missed my Apple MacBook Pro, but all my apps and files were available through our Awingu portal. I just needed to get used to the QWERTY keyboard (my MacBook has an AZERTY keyboard).

.
That made me think: people end up without their professional laptop a couple times per year. They either get stolen, break down, get forgotten, et cetera. Kensington provides us with some stats behind this phenomenon:

  • 1 in 10 out of every laptop will get stolen or lost over the course of their lifetime
  • Every 53 seconds, a laptop gets stolen
  • 52% of laptops are stolen… at the office

I didn’t find any numbers on people that forgot their laptop at home, but I’m almost positive that I’m not the only one, and that it happens occasionally. The above numbers, on the other hand, are scary. And as a business, you are better prepared to enable employees to work without productivity loss and to protect the devices that are stolen or lost.

To make things worse, the cost of a lost or stolen device is not limited to the cost of the machine. All too often, it triggers much bigger data breaches. Estimates are that on average the cost of a stolen device exceeds $50.000. Furthermore, BitGlass identified that more than 25.3% of data breaches that have occurred between 2006 and 2016 were due to “malicious actors getting their hands on a corporate mobile device”.

At Awingu, we tackle all these challenges with a very innovative approach. We enable any application and file to run in a browser. Also, there is no link with one specific physical device: just take any device, log in, start working. Just like I was able to do this morning when I entered the office and found out I forgot my laptop. Simple, yet effective and productive.

The concept behind Awingu also means there is no data running locally on your device. Where we can’t prevent your device to get stolen, we can prevent your confidential data to get compromised. In other words: losing a corporate device will bring only the cost of the physical device with it, but not the cost of lost or compromised data.
