HOW DO I DEPLOY FSLOGIX?

Back in November 2018, Microsoft announced acquiring FSLogix. The acquisition should be seen in the context of the WVD launch, and, a continuous effort to improve the adoption of Office 365.

What issue does FSLogix solve? They write : “FSLogix is a next-generation application provisioning platform that reduces the amount of hardware, time, and labor required to support virtual desktops. We provide solutions for enterprises to easily and cost-effectively execute their strategic IT vision of the enterprise-class virtual workspace.”

We deployed FSLogix in the following steps:

Note: you can also follow the very detailed FSLogix manual.

A. Enable windows search service on both appservers

 Set-Service 'WSearch' -StartupType Manual Get-Service
 Start-Service WSearch
 Get-Service Wsearch # to check that its running now

B. Disable any folder redirection previously set in group policies

C. Open group policy editor and remove folder redirection policies

D. Install Office 365 as RemoteApp with the Office Deployment Tool

To use Office as RemoteApp you need to install office with an extra flag to ensure office apps can run over multiple sessions. To run the installation by using the “Office deployment tool” you need to download the tool which will give a setup.exe and configuration XML file. This XML file needs to be edited by adding the following section:

 <Display Level="None" AcceptEULA="True" />
 <Property Name="SharedComputerLicensing" Value="1" />

We changed the configuration xml file like this:

<Configuration>
  <Add OfficeClientEdition="64">
    <Product ID="O365ProPlusRetail">
      <Language ID="nl-nl" />
    </Product>
  </Add>
  <Display Level="None" AcceptEULA="TRUE" />
  <Property Name="SharedComputerLicensing" Value="1" />
</Configuration>

Once the xml file is correctly edited, you can install Office on your App servers with following command in command prompt:

 setup.exe /download configuration.xml
 setup.exe /configure configuration.xml

E. Install FSLogix on App servers

This is simple, just install it on each App server using the binary FsLogixAppsSetup.exe

FSLogixAppsSetup.exe /install /quiet ProductKey=###############

F. Create a file share for FsLogix to store its profile containers/office365 containers

(ex: \\awingu-ad\FsLogix\profiles). Don’t forget to secure the file share with proper permissions.

  • CREATOR OWNER – Full Control (Apply onto: Subfolders and Files Only)
  • SYSTEM – Full Control (Apply onto: This Folder, Subfolders and Files)
  • Administrators – Full Control (Apply onto: This Folder, Subfolders and Files)
  • Users – Create Folder/Append Data (Apply to: This Folder Only)
  • Users – List Folder/Read Data (Apply to: This Folder Only)
  • Users – Read Attributes (Apply to: This Folder Only)
  • Users – Traverse Folder/Execute File (Apply to: This Folder Only)

G. Setup FSLogix group policies for profile containers & Office365 containers
