In May 2015, Citrix announced the End of Life date for Citrix XenApp 6.5 to be June 30th, 2018. If your company is still using that (or an earlier) version of XenApp, it is time to sound the alarm bell: since Saturday, the product is officially outdated. The Citrix End of Life terms state that you can still continue using the product and the historical information on their website, but you will no longer receive updates or hotfixes. That implies that it does not evolve with computing and IT security standards. Furthermore, once XenApp 6.5 has reached the End of Extended Support, you will not be able to contact Citrix with any inquiries about your product.
To keep your environment up to date, Citrix urges its XenApp 6.5 users to make the transition towards 7.x. However, if you plan to upgrade your XenApp environment, you should keep in mind that this will cost you valuable time and CapEx and OpEx spending. First of all, XenApp environments that were previously installed on premise will now be persuaded to move towards the Citrix Workspace Cloud or cloud-based XenApp Express. Doing so will require your IT infrastructure to be built-up from scratch, as there is currently no corresponding migration application. Secondly, Citrix’ ‘Cloud Portal Services Manager’ will soon disappear, making it hard for those that whose time is limited and previously used the ‘Cloud Portal Services Manager’ to easily publish applications or desktops.
If you, like many others, would like to avoid the costly and cumbersome upgrade to XenApp 7.x and are looking for an alternative solution, you should consider moving from Citrix to Awingu. There are some fundamental reasons to do so:
- First of all, Awingu is a cost-efficient alternative with a TCO that can be up to 81% lower than your current Citrix environment while offering similar functionalities to your employees.
- Secondly, the simplicity in terms licensing, deployment and upgrading makes Awingu a sound alternative for those that are puzzled with the complexity of Citrix and its many, many components.
- Lastly, moving away from your current Citrix environment to Awingu will not entail any additional infrastructure purchases, because Awingu leverages on your investments and is easily installed on your current backend.
